Rutgers Women's Tennis Edges St. John's, 4-3

After an 8-3 loss No. 1 doubles by Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ), RU notched two victories to take a 1-0 team lead on the Red Storm. No. 2 doubles saw Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) beat Tessa Woodruff and Lauren Lorenzetti of St. John’s, 8-5. Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) and Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) won by an identical 8-5 score at No. 3 doubles against Vera Efstathiou and Olga Romanidis.
Weckstein lost at No. 1 singles to Nataliya Kostova, 6-4, 7-5. St. John’s took a one-point lead when the Red Storm’s Kristina Bothora downed Sommerlad at the No. 2 position in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Rutgers rebounded with two victories to take a one-point edge in the see-saw battle with wins by Hellier and Balasa at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively. St. John’s tied the match with a win at the No. 5 spot by Lorenzetti over Link in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Shmakova sealed the win for the RU with a victory at No. 6 singles, downing Olga Romanidis, 6-0, 6-4.
The Scarlet Knights travel to south Florida for spring break, playing three matches in Miami over the course of the following week. The women will open against Lafayette at noon on Sunday before facing Cornell at 11 a.m. on Monday and Colgate at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
