Rutgers Downs Villanova 5-0 for Seventh Win

VILLANOVA, PA - The Rutgers women’s tennis team (7-6, 3-2 BIG EAST) downed BIG EAST foe Villanova, 5-0, Friday in a rain-shortened match. Rutgers took the first two matches in doubles play to secure the doubles point. With inclement weather quickly moving into the area, the third doubles match was not completed.
Senior Jennifer Hellier (Annaoplis, MD) and freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) beat Jessie Rybacki and Kelly McAndrew and No. 2 doubles, 8-3. No. 3 doubles saw freshmen Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) earned the victory over Morgan Flezzani and Erica Walter, 8-3. The No. 1 doubles match between sophomore Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and senior Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) and Villanova’s Jennifer Zick and Stephanie Ariot was stopped after RU had already won the doubles point. At the time of the stoppage, the Scarlet Knights were leading, 7-5, in the match.
RU took all four singles matches that were completed to earn the team victory. Weckstein won at No. 1 singles over Zick, 6-2, 6-0. Sommerlad earned a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Courtney Flezzani of the Wildcats. Markowitz and sophomore Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) were new additions to the singles lineup on Friday. Both were victorious with Markowitz winning at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Magomedova taking the win at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-0.
The Scarlet Knights will return home to play Syracuse, Sunday, March 30, at 10 a.m.
