Rutgers Sweeps Seton Hall For Fifth-Straight Win

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and senior co-captain Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) defeated Viviana Figueroa and Emelie Akerbrant of Seton Hall, 8-2. No. 2 doubles saw senior co-captain Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) and freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) down Lorell Zamot and Kim Barfuss, 8-2. Freshmen Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) earned RU’s third win in doubles competition, beating Erin Burke and Lara Spagnuolo, 8-3, at the No. 3 position.
The Scarlet Knights took all the singles matches, surrendering just two sets all afternoon. At No. 1 singles, Weckstein improved to 9-8 for the season with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Barfuss. Sommerlad earned her 11th win of the spring season, downing Akerbrant, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. No. 3 singles saw Hellier defeat Zamot, 6-0, 6-3. Balasa extended her winning streak to eight matches, earning a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 decision over Figueroa at No. 4 singles. She has a team-high 12 wins for the Scarlet Knights in dual competition this spring. Shmakova won at the No. 5 position, beating Spagnuolo, 6-3, 6-0. Markowitz registered her fourth win of the spring, downing Burke, 6-4, 7-6 (13-11), at No. 6 singles.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Friday, April 11, facing Providence in the second of three-straight home matches to conclude the regular season. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on the outdoor courts of the Rutgers Tennis Complex. Should bad weather move into the area, the match will be moved to 8 p.m. inside the East Brunswick Tennis Center.
