PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rutgers women’s tennis team wrapped up its successful fall season by competing in the 2004 Wilson/ITA Eastern Regional Championships, held Oct. 23-26 at the University of Pennsylvania.
Along with Rutgers, the ITA Eastern Regional featured the best teams on the East Coast, including Harvard, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Cornell and Richmond.
In the singles draw, the Scarlet Knights were represented by Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) and Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA), who both earned first-round wins. Markowitz knocked off Joann Lee of Lehigh, 6-1, 6-1 and Elder-Bush earned a 7-6 (4), 6-2 triumph over Monica Lyskawa of West Virginia. Both Elder-Bush and Markowitz lost to seeded players in the second round.
“Jill and Katrina played their best tennis of the fall,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “They are clearly two of the better players on the East Coast, and they showed that when you train hard and compete hard, you can walk off the court with your head held high. It was a great effort of their part.”
In doubles action, Elder-Bush and Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) lost to Liora Gelblum and Elizabeth Winokur of Georgetown, 8-2.
