Rutgers Holds Off Norfolk State 63-58
Dec 18 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman forward Ollie Bailey scored a career-high 21 points and sophomore guard Quincy Douby added 13 as Rutgers beat pesky Norfolk State 63-58 in front of a crowd of 5,024 on Saturday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
The 225-pound Bailey, who entered the game third in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage, was 8-for-10 from the field and is now hitting .646 from the field on the season. Bailey has been a force in the low post in virtually every game, using a variety of moves and pump fakes, and finishing around the rim with a soft touch.
Rutgers (4-3) appeared on its way to a double-digit win, but the gritty Spartans (3-5) of the MEAC Conference went on a 12-3 run to cut the Scarlet Knights lead to three at 59-56 with 1:25 left. Freshman guard Marquis Webb then hit a driving layup to make it a five-point game again. Webb hit two of four free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Rutgers held a 28-22 lead at the half despite struggling with its perimeter shooting. The Scarlet Knights were 12-of-31 from the floor, and Webb's 3-pointer with time running in the first half was the only three-point shot the Scarlet Knights made in the half.
Rutgers' leading scorers and best three-point shooters, Douby, and senior guard Ricky Shields, shot 0-for-11 and 0-for-8 from three-point range, respectively. For the game, RU was 1-for-23 from three-point range while Norfolk State was 3-for-18.
Shields finished with six points, breaking a streak of 13 consecutive games that he had scored in double figures. The last time Shields did not score in double figures was on March 7, 2004, when he tallied seven points vs. Seton Hall.
Rutgers out-rebounded Norfolk State 43-35 and was 20-of-29 from the free throw line while the Spartans were 9-for-12.
Rutgers is next in action on Wednesday when the Scarlet Knights host intrastate rival FDU at the RAC. Tip-off s 7:30 p.m.
