PISCATAWAY, NJ – Despite winning all three doubles matches, the Rutgers women’s tennis team (8-6) dropped a 5-2 decision to Princeton on Wednesday at the Rutgers Tennis Complex in Piscataway, NJ.
At first doubles, Andrea Weckstein and Ketevan Shmakova registered a 8-5 victory, while Jill Markowitz and Alina Balasa followed with a 8-4 triumph at second doubles. Helen Magomedova and Lauren Edelschein made it a clean sweep for the Scarlet Knights with a 8-4 win at third doubles.
Princeton fought back in the singles matches, however, registering wins at first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles to clinch the match. Weckstein lost in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-1), as did Markowitz (6-7, 6-1, 6-0).
“Our doubles teams continue to be very, very solid,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “Even though we weren’t able to pull out the win, I was encourage by the doubles play. No we just have to move on and get ready for two tough matches this weekend.”
Rutgers returns to action when it travels to Blacksburg, VA, to face Virginia Tech and Georgetown in a pair of BIG EAST matches. RU faces Virginia Tech on Saturday, March 27, and Georgetown on Sunday, March 28.
