RU Women's Tennis Defeats Pittsburgh 5-2

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Led by Ketevan Shmakova, who won her sixth consecutive singles match, the Rutgers women’s tennis team defeated Pittsburgh on Saturday, 5-2. The win improves RU”s record to 11-7 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST.
In doubles action, Andrea Weckstein and Shmakova picked up an 8-3 win, followed by Alina Balasa and Jill Markowitz at second doubles, who also won 8-3. Kaitlin Link and Lauren Edelschein made it a clean sweep for the Scarlet Knights in doubles play with a 8-3 win at third doubles. Rutgers is now 14-4 this season when it wins the team doubles point.
Rutgers won four on six singles matches, led by Shmakova’s 6-3, 6-3 victory at second singles. Markowitz (fourth singles), Magomedova (fifth singles) and Edelschein (sixth singles) all won in straight sets.
“It’s a great thing to see us peaking at the right time,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “Keteven [Shmakova] is playing very well right now, but it seems like everyone is hitting their stride. Hopefully we can carry the momentum further as we tackle the heart of our BIG EAST schedule.”
Rutgers returns to action on Thursday, April 8, when it hosts Villanova at the Rutgers Tennis Complex.
