WEST POINT, NY – Playing with just four healthy bodies, the Rutgers women’s tennis team (4-4) was able to salvage a split of its weekend matches with a 4-3 triumph against Long Island University on Sunday afternoon.
At first singles, freshman Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) knocked off Merve Koksal, 6-3, 6-2, followed by a tight three-set win from Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) at second singles (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) each won in straight sets to clinch the match for Rutgers.
In doubles, Elder-Bush and Dujsic won their second match of the weekend with a 8-2 decision over Veronica Apostu-Efremov and Krystina Bachner. RU was forced to default at fifth and sixth singles and third doubles, respectively.
“It was a tough weekend for us with only having four healthy players, but I thought the biggest highlight was Helen Magomedova’s play,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “She stepped up with two big singles wins and is performing well in her senior season.”
The Scarlet Knights return to action of Sunday, March 6, when they host Brown at 11:00 a.m.
