WASHINGTON, DC – The Rutgers women’s tennis team concluded its spring season with a 7-0 loss to St. John’s on Friday, April 15. With the loss, RU finishes the season 10-11 overall and 5-4 in the BIG EAST. It was RU’s second-straight record of above .500 in conference play in the two-year tenure of head coach Ben Bucca.
Freshman Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) pulled out a tight 8-6 decision at first doubles, but the Red Storm responded by winning the final two doubles matches to claim the team point. The point was not decided until SJU squeaked out a 9-8 victory at third doubles over Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario).
In singles, St. John’s won all six matches in straight sets. Elder-Bush battled Barbora Blahutiakova but eventually lost 6-3, 6-2. Balasa also played a close match at third singles, falling 6-4, 6-2.
