PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) was named the Most Valuable Player at the annual Rutgers women's tennis awards banquet on Tuesday, May 3.
Magomedova played fourth singles and third doubles this season for the Scarlet Knights, posting a 14-6 record in singles competition during the spring and teaming primarily with Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) at third doubles. During the fall season, she and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) advanced to the finals of the Flight C Doubles draw at the prestigious USTA Invitational in Forest Hills, NY.
Magomedova led a late-season charge that saw RU win five of its final eight matches but narrowly miss qualifying for its second-straight BIG EAST Tournament. Under second-year head coach Ben Bucca, Rutgers finished 10-11 this year, including a 5-4 mark against BIG EAST competition. The Scarlet Knights return seven of their eight letterwinners to the 2005-06 roster and also add two highly-touted recruits.
