Rutgers Baseball Unveils 2007 Slate

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers University baseball head coach Fred Hill announced the program's 2007 schedule today. The Scarlet Knights will once again play one of the most challenging schedules in the nation, including two of last season's College World Series participants, two more NCAA tournament qualifiers and the field from the always-competitive BIG EAST Conference.
Rutgers will kick off the 2007 campaign by traveling to Williamsburg, Va., to play a three-game series with William & Mary on Feb. 16-18. The following weekend, Rutgers will head back to the state of Virginia, this time to Norfolk to take on Old Dominion for another three game set on February 23-25.
Up next, the Scarlet Knights will return south to Atlanta, where they will take on the first of two teams who participated in the 2006 College World Series. Georgia Tech finished last year ranked eighth in the post-season polls after a season that saw them ranked number one at one point and finish with a birth in the College World Series. Rutgers will take on the Yellow Jackets in a three game series March 2-4.
RU will take their annual spring break trip to Florida where the Scarlet Knights will spend 10 days playing some of the best teams in the nation. March 9-11 spans a three game set with Florida International followed by a single game with Florida Atlantic on March 13th.
Next up is a meeting with a second 2006 College World Series participant, the University of Miami, on March 14th. The Hurricanes finished the season last year ranked sixth overall in the final national polls.
Rutgers will wrap up their spring break trip with a three-game series at Central Florida on March 16-18 before heading back north to open up their home schedule and begin BIG EAST play.
The Scarlet Knights will play their first home contest on March 24, debuting Bainton Field, the program's brand new FieldTurf surface, with a single game against St. Peter's. The BIG EAST schedule will begin two days later when Georgetown travels to "the Banks" to compete in a three-game series on March 23-25.
Other notable BIG EAST match-ups include a three-game home set with in-state rival Seton Hall on April 13-15. The Pirates are the only BIG EAST team the Scarlet Knights did not face in league play last season. The schools met in a mid-week, non-conference game last year, which Rutgers won 9-5.
Bainton Field will play host to the defending BIG EAST champion Notre Dame Fighting Irish, as well. The Scarlet Knights will take on the Irish in a double-header Saturday, April 28th, and a single game Sunday, April 29th.
Notre Dame, along with Princeton, who the Knights play away on March 28th, make up the final two 2006 NCAA tournament qualifiers on the Scarlet Knight's schedule.
Rutgers will close out the regular season with a three-game series at Villanova on May 17-19.
RU hopes to once again earn a berth in the league's post-season tournament, scheduled to begin May 23rd. The Scarlet Knights, who finished sixth in the conference last season, reached the semifinals of last year's tournament before being eliminated by Louisville.
Rutgers returns six position starters from last season, including All-BIG EAST selections Todd Frazier (Toms River, N.J.), Frank Meade (Linden, N.J.) and Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, N.J.). A healthy pitching staff, along with the additions of several young hurlers, gives Rutgers high hopes for the 2007 season.
