Baseball Wins Series Finale at Northwestern
May 16 | Baseball
EVANSTON, Ill. – Rutgers baseball won Saturday's series finale at Northwestern by a score of 15-9 at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
The Scarlet Knights (26-28, 13-17) used a collection of big innings on offense to clinch the series over the Wildcats (20-30-1, 8-22) and head into the Big Ten Tournament having won four of the last five series.
The offense exploded for 15 runs on 18 hits while the pitching staff did enough to fend off a hungry Northwestern team trying to end its season with a win.
In total, RU hung three crooked numbers, highlights by a five-spot in the fifth to turn a tight game into a comfortable lead.
Chase Krewson, Ryan Jaros, Charlie Meglio and Matt Chatelle all drove in three runs, with Krewson hitting his ninth home run of the season in the process.
An RBI single from Peyton Bonds got the scoring started in the first before a two-run triple from Charlie Meglio and RBI single from Yomar Carreras brought it to 4-0.
After Northwestern added a pair in the fourth, the Scarlet Knights broke out for five to take control of the game.
Ryan Jaros brought home a pair with a single, Meglio added another with a double and Chatelle had a two-run single to push the RU lead to 9-2. After Jaros singled in the 10th run in the seventh, Jack Sweeney singled in a run to make it 11-2.
The Wildcats kept fighting, scoring five in the eighth to cut the Rutgers advantage to 11-7. Despite their rally, the Scarlet Knights answered back with a three-run homer from Krewson in the top of the ninth and another RBI single from Carreras to go up 15-7.
Although Northwestern scored a pair in the bottom half, RU would secure the 15-9 win and head into the Big Ten Tournament with another series win.
Rutgers will now shift its focus to next week's Big Ten Tournament, where it will be the No. 10 seed and face No. 6 Michigan at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday to open the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
