Rutgers Falls at No. 23 Georgetown, 66-50
Feb 22 | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Roy Hibbert scored a career-high 25 points and No. 23 Georgetown snapped a three-game losing streak with a 66-50 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday night.
The Hoyas (18-7, 9-5 Big East) had lost to then-No. 9 West Virginia, Marquette and then-No. 4 Villanova.
A loss to Rutgers (15-12, 5-9) would have put the Hoyas in position to match last year's five-game losing streak at the end of the season which derailed any chances they had of making the NCAA tournament.
Instead, Georgetown consistently went inside to the 7-foot-2 Hibbert, who was 10-for-13 from the field.
Quincy Douby, the Big East's leading scorer, had 29 points on 9-for-20 shooting to lead the Scarlet Knights, who were held to their second-lowest point total of the season and shot just 31 percent.
Marquis Webb was the next highest scorer for Rutgers with six points.
Georgetown opened a 34-20 halftime lead as Hibbert and Jeff Green, with nine points, combined for 20 in the first half.
Darrel Owens scored 11 points for Georgetown and Jonathan Wallace added 10.
A 3-pointer by Douby with 4:32 left brought the Scarlet Knights within 53-42, but they never got any closer.
Douby was the only Rutgers player to score during a stretch that covered the final 1:08 of the first half and the opening 7 minutes of the second.
The loss dropped Rutgers into a tie for 12th place in the Big East with St. John's.
POSTGAME NOTES
DOUBY CRACKS 1,500-POINT PLATEAU
All-America and All-BIG EAST Candidate Quincy Douby became just the 10th player in Rutgers history to crack the 1,500-point mark following his 29-point outing vs. Georgetown. The junior guard, who remains 10th on the RU all-time career scoring list, now has 1,520 career points and needs six points to pass Roy Hinson, who scored 1,520 points from 1979-1983.
DOUBY MOVES INTO FOURTH PLACE ON RU SINGLE-SEASON SCORING LIST
Quincy Douby’s 29-point outing vs. Georgetown gives him 669 points this season and moved him past Keith Hughes (649 points in 1989-90) and Phil Sellers (657 points in 1974-75) into fourth place on the Rutgers all-time single-season scoring list.
Rutgers All-time Single-season Scoring List
1. Bob Lloyd (1966-67) 809
2. James Bailey (1977-78) 730
3. Eric Riggins (1986-87) 692
4. Quincy Douby (2005-06) 669
WEBB STELLAR DEFENSIVE EFFORT…AGAIN
All-BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Candidate Marquis Webb turned in yet another stellar defensive effort vs. Georgetown. The 6-5 junior swingman helped hold the Hoyas’ second-leading scorer Brandon Bowman scoreless on 0-for-4 shooting from the field. Bowman entered the contest averaging 11.6 points per game.
JOYNES ON THE BOARDS
Junior center Byron Joynes, despite being hampered by a variety of physical ailments, continues to rebound the basketball as he tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds vs. Georgetown. The 6-9 Joynes now has 360 career rebounds, which places him in 45th place on the Rutgers all-time rebounding list. Joynes has been slowed all season with a sprained left shoulder, which requires the wearing of a harness. He is also plagued by a painful hyper-extended toe and, to add insult to injury, he was suffering from cramps during the second half of the Georgetown game.
