Rutgers Rolls Past South Florida, 62-44
Feb 26 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior guard Quincy Douby scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Rutgers improved its BIG EAST Tournament hopes with a 62-44 victory over South Florida.
Junior swingman Marquis Webb added 15 points for Rutgers (16-12, 6-9 BIG EAST), which extended the school-record losing streak of South Florida (6-21, 0-14) to 16 straight. The 44 points allowed by Rutgers is a record for the fewest points allowed by a Scarlet Knight team in BIG EAST play (RU allowed 47 in a 49-47 win over St. Jon’s in 1997).
With Rutgers holding a 7-6 lead, freshman point guard Anthony Farmer hit a three-pointer that started the Scarlet Knights on a 14-0 run. Douby scored the next 11 in the run, and Rutgers extended its lead to 26-8.
The Scarlet Knights did not have a field goal and scored just three points in the final 8:13 of the half, but still held a 30-15 lead at halftime. South Florida shot 22.7 percent with 12 turnovers in the half.
The Scarlet Knights never let the lead slip under 11 points the rest of the way. Melvin Buckley and James Holmes each had 14 points for South Florida while Solomon Jones had 11 rebounds.
The Knights have one game remaining, at St. John's on March 5, one of the teams tied for 11th place at 5-9. The other two are Providence and Louisville.
The Bulls, who were held to a season-low in points, need to beat either Connecticut or Georgetown in their final two games to avoid becoming only the third team to go winless in the BIG EAST and the first since Miami in 1993-94.

In 17 minutes, Inglis recorded four points and four rebounds. Inglis left the game with 2:18 remaining in the contests to a standing ovation from the crowd.
KNIGHTS GET DEFENSIVE
The 44 points allowed by RU is the least amount of points Rutgers has ever allowed in a BIG EAST game. The previous low had been 47 scored by St. John's in a 49-47 Knights'
win on Jan. 29,1997.
In addition, the 44 points is the second-lowest of the season (42 by Delaware State, 11/22/05). Rutgers held South Florida to a season-low 15 first half points. The previous low by an opponent was 18 by Princeton on 12/31/05. It is the lowest first half point total by a Rutgers opponent since the Knights held visiting Columbia to 14 first half points (11/18/02).
South Florida shot just 28% from the field in the first 20 minutes. This marked the fifth time RU has held an opponent under 30% from the field in the first half this season.
