Feb 25 | Women's Tennis
NEW YORK, NY - Columbia used four singles victories to defeated Rutgers, 5-2, in a hard-fought match on Saturday, Feb. 25, in New York City. The Scarlet Knights saw their two-match winning streak end, but still stand over .500 at 4-3 early in the season.
Two of the six singles matches went to three sets, with Columbia claming victory in both of them. After Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win at first singles, Columbia’s Sydney Murray and Angela Hendry followed with back-to-back wins at second and third singles, respectively, to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) made the score 3-2 with her 7-6, 6-4 triumph over Nina Suda at fourth singles, but straight sets wins at fifth and sixth singles sealed the match for Columbia.
In doubles, Elder-Bush and Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, NY) won 8-5 at second doubles, but Columbia took the team point with wins at first and third doubles, respectively.
“It was an extremely competitive, hard-fought match,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “It could have gone either way. But this will make us better as we move into the heart of our BIG EAST schedule.”
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, March 4, when it travels to Syracuse, NY, to face Cincinnati. The Scarlet Knights will also take on the Orange on Sunday, March 5.
