STORRS, CT - The Rutgers women’s tennis team (13-7, 8-4 BIG EAST) used stellar doubles play and four singles victories to close out its 2006 regular season with a 5-2 victory over Connecticut on Wednesday at the UConn Tennis Courts.
The tandem of freshman Dana Gordon (Margate, NJ) and Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) started off the match with a convincing 8-2 victory over Christine Burek and BreAnn Cheung, and the team doubles point was clinched when sophomore Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA) and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) ousted Jessica Porter and Elizabeth Dibbs. Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) and Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) completed the sweep with a 8-7 win at third doubles.
All four of RU’s singles victories came in straight sets. Wins by Elder-Bush, Gordon and freshman Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, NY) clinched the match for the Scarlet Knights, and a 6-3, 7-5 triumph by Balasa at fifth singles gave Rutgers its fifth point.
Rutgers will now await an invitation to the 2006 BIG EAST Championships, which are scheduled to begin next Thursday, April 20, on the campus of the University of South Florida.
