PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women’s tennis team (11-6, 6-3 BIG EAST) rebounded from a loss to St. John’s last weekend by defeating Villanova (8-7, 1-3 BIG EAST), 7-0, on Wednesday in Piscataway.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Freshman Dana Gordon (Margate, NJ) started things off with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at second singles, followed by a 6-1, 6-3 win by Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) at fourth singles. Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA), Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) and Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) also rolled to victories while Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) rebounded with a second-set loss to defeat Jadyn Williamson at third singles.
The doubles tandems of Markowitz/Shmakova and Edelschein/Gordon lost just one game combined between the two of them.
“This was a strong win for us,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “It gives us a sense of renewed confidence heading into a critical weekend of conference matches.”
The Scarlet Knights host Georgetown on Saturday, April 8 at 10:00 a.m. and West Virginia on Sunday, April 9, also at 10:00 a.m.
