Rutgers Falls at Louisville, 3-1, in BIG EAST Action
Oct 28 | Men's Soccer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Rutgers men's soccer team (7-9-1, 4-6-0 BIG EAST) dropped a 3-1 result at Louisville (10-5-1, 6-3-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Cardinal Park.
The Cardinal offense proved too much for the Scarlet Knights as they held a 19-7 advantage in shots and was just the third team to score three or more goals against Rutgers this season. Despite relinquishing a goal in the 19th minute, senior goalkeeper Matt VanOekel (Chesapeake, Va.) kept the match close as he made five first-half saves. Louisville took the 1-0 lead off a goal from Ryan McDonald (assist, Gerardo Chavez).
UofL struck swiftly following the intermission, adding the game winner three minutes into the second half. The Cardinals Phil Edington scored the team's second goal on an assist from Aaron Clapham. Clapham gave Louisville the 3-0 edge in the 66th minute with a goal of his own on a pass from Frank Jonke.
Rutgers scored its lone goal of the game in the 73rd minute when senior Chris Moore (Gosforth, England) notched his second score of the season off a pass from freshman Stafford Chipungu (Randallstown, Md.). The assist was Chipungu's first of his collegiate career.
The Scarlet Knights will return to Piscataway to close out their regular-season home schedule against Brown on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and conference foe Cincinnati on Saturday, Nov. 3.
