Rutgers Defeats Army, 5-2, in Home Opener

East Brunswick, N.J. - The Rutgers University women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory against Army at the East Brunswick Racquet Club on Saturday night.
"We came out ready to play tonight," said head coach Ben Bucca. "The team played well across the board. We played very aggressive, confident tennis. Our play today showed how much we've improved since our first match against Cincinnati."
The Scarlet Knights' Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, N.J.) and Christine Tran (Centerville, Va.) remain undefeated at third doubles, winning, 8-1, against Army's Kristin Beehler and Paige Ford. Also at doubles, Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) and Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) defeated the Black Knight's Niki Flach and Jessica Schurtz, 8-3.
In singles, RU won four matches in straight sets. At first singles, Elder-Bush defeated Flach, 6-2, 6-4, while at second singles, Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) defeated Sarah Giles-Madden, 6-3, 6-3.
At the fourth singles slot, Baker won a 6-0, 6-4 match over Jessica Shurtz and Tran, at sixth, rounded out the Scarlet Knights' victories with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Birdie Burke.
The Scarlet Knights travel to Rhode Island to take on Providence on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m., and Brown on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 10:00 a.m.
