Feb 19 | Women's Tennis
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rutgers women's tennis team traveled to Rhode Island this weekend to take on Providence College on Feb. 17 and Brown on Feb. 18. RU defeated Providence 7-0 in its first conference win, and lost to Brown by the same score. Following the weekend, the Scarlet Knights are 3-3, 1-1 BIG EAST.
"It was a weekend where we played some very good tennis," said head coach Ben Bucca. "Against Providence we just came out and played great tennis. The match against Brown was extremely competitive, [and] even though the match was 7-0, it could have been 4-3."
Against Providence, at first doubles Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) and Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) defeated the Friars' Ashley Rissolo and Allison Cohen, 8-2, while Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, M.A.) and Caitlin Baker (Altoona, P.A.) blanked Meghan Gilroy and Kerry Schulz, 8-0, at second doubles. At third doubles, Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, N.J.) and Christine Tran (Centreville, N.J.) maintained their undefeated record by taking down Dara Hawkins-Hodgson and Jen Cusack, 8-1.
In singles, all six matches were decided in two sets. Baker defeated Hawkins-Hodgson, 6-0, 6-1, her first time out at fifth singles. Tran did the same at sixth singles, beating Cusack 6-1, 6-1. Elder-Bush and Arlak recorded their first wins in the first and second singles spots, respectively, both by a score of 6-0, 6-1.
Against Brown on Sunday, Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Arlak recorded the Scarlet Knights' sole win, defeating Michelle Pautler and Sara Mansur at first doubles, 8-5, despite the Bears winning the doubles point.
In singles, Elder-Bush, Edelschein and Tran all took their opponents into tiebreakers. At first singles, Elder-Bush fell to Brown's Daisy Ames, 6-1, 7-6, (6), while Edelschein, at fifth singles, lost to Alexa Baggio 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2). At sixth singles, Tran was defeated by Kelley Kirkpartick, 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7).
