Rutgers Drops Two Close Matches on Spring Break Trip

FLORIDA - The Rutgers women's tennis team fell in its final two matches of its spring break trip to Hillsborough Community College, 4-3, on March 12, and to Barry University, 5-4, on March 14. In the most recent Division II rankings, Barry held the 15th slot nationally.
On March 12, the Scarlet Knights lost a 4-3 match-up to Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla. The Scarlet Knights won the doubles point as Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) and Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) posted an 8-3 win over HCC's Amanda Yogus and Alba Passanisi. At third doubles, Christine Tran and Lauren Edelschein knocked off Margo Rice and Eva Sambrano, 8-0.
In singles, Polina Zaretser and Tran got the lone wins for the Scarlet Knights. Zaretser, in her first singles match of the season, defeated Sambrano, 6-2, 6-1, at the fifth position, while Tran posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rice at the sixth slot.
In the match-up against Barry in Miami Shores, Fla., played in the Division II nine-point format, the Buccaneers clinched the win at number four singles where Zaretser, despite leading 3-1, was forced to retire after re-injuring her back.
Rutgers started off the match with a 2-1 lead in doubles as Baker and Bush posted an 8-5 win over Helen Wisniewski and Laime Contreras at second doubles. At third doubles, Anela Dujsic and Edelschein defeated Saskia Kruse and Julie Cadet, 8-4.
In singles, Baker and Edelschien both put their second points on the board for the Scarlet Knights. Baker got a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Barry's Kruse at fifth singles, while Edelschien recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Muriel Sherwood.
Rutgers will travel to Queens, N.Y. on Thursday, March 22, for a BIG EAST match-up with St. John's at 3:00 p.m.
