PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Former Rutgers standout pitcher Neil Ioviero guided Kean University to the Division III National Championship on Tuesday.
Ioviero, who was a force on the mound for the Scarlet Knights from 1991-94, led the Cougars to a 5-4 victory over Emory University in 10 innings Tuesday afternoon to end an impressive undefeated mark at the College World Series in Grand Chute, Wis. Kean, in its 10th season under the direction of Ioviero, enjoyed a 43-8 record this spring. He was named the Division III New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association and Regional Coach of the Year.
Ioviero was a standout with the Scarlet Knights during his time "On the Banks," serving on a team that won three-straight Atlantic 10 Regular-Season titles and two tournament championships. RU earned an automatic bid the NCAA Tournament in 1991 and 1993. The 1993 club finished 38-17, tying for the fourth-most wins in school history.
Rutgers head coach Fred Hill has seen many of his former players move on to have successful playing careers at the professional level. Many more have ventured into the coaching ranks, including two on his current staff in assistant coach Glen Gardner (1986-88) and Director of Operations Darren Fenster (1997-2000), both former All-Americans under Hill's tutelage.
