PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill announced that Jayson Hernandez (Jackson, N.J.) will join the Scarlet Knights this fall. Hernandez, a catcher, will have three years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Winthrop University.
"I am pleased Jayson [who is from nearby Jackson, N.J.] has come home," said Hill. "He is a talented catcher and exceptional person. We are excited to have him join our program and look forward to his arrival in the fall."
The 5-10, 190-pound catcher played one season at Winthrop. He played in 22 games as a freshman with the Eagles last season, earning 15 starts behind the dish. He finished the season with five hits, including a double as the Winthrop compiled a 33-27 record advancing to the semifinals of the Big South Conference tournament.
Hernandez was a three-year varsity letterwinner at St. Rose High School in Belmar. He earned First Team All-Shore honors by the Asbury Park Press after hitting .480 as a senior in 2006. He is a two-time All-Shore selection, also garnering Third Team accolades as a junior. Hernandez was ranked the 177th best high school prospect by Baseball America following the 2006 season. He was named the team Most Valuable Player of Parochial B Conference after leading St Rose to a New Jersey state title in 2005.
Hernandez will join nine newcomers - Jaren Matthews (Teaneck, N.J.), DJ Anderson (Randolph, N.J.), Brandon Boykin (Teaneck, N.J.), Russell Hopkins (Piscataway, N.J.), Danny Perrine (Scotch Plains, N.J.), Nick Gaeta (Montville, N.J.), Pat Biserta (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and Billy Murphy (Cranford, N.J.) and Willie Beard (Spotswood, N.J.) - in the fall.
