PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Three future and current Scarlet Knights were selected to the U20 Canadian National Team that will compete in the U20 Women’s World Cup in Chile. Incoming freshmen Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Ontario) and Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada) will join junior Karla Schacher (Toefield, Alberta) on the squad.
Those three, along with sophomore Rheanne Sleiman (North Vancouver, Canada) won a gold medal in the 2008 CONCACAF Cup this past summer to clinch a berth in the U20 Women’s World Cup.
In Chile 2008, Canada will play in Group C against Congo DR, Germany and Japan. Canada plays Japan on Nov. 20, Congo DR on Nov. 23 and Germany on Nov. 27. To advance, Canada will need to finish first or second in its group. The quarterfinals take place on Dec. 1, the semifinals on Dec. 4 and the championship on Dec. 7.
Filigno has 20 caps under her belt as a member of the Canadian National Team. She scored her first international goal in Team Canada's 6-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Her first appearance on the squad was against the US National Team in the 2008 Four Nations Cup, held in China. As a member of the U20 team, Filigno has six goals in the past 10 games, including three game-winners.
Schacher has recorded two game-winning goals for the U20 team in 2008. She also has eight goals and three assists in two seasons at Rutgers. Woeller has started the last six matches at defense for the U20 team.
