Rutgers Opens Up BIG EAST Play with Win Over Bearcats

PISCATAWAY, N.J.'The Rutgers women's tennis team added yet another win to its stellar r????sum????, defeating the Cincinnati Bearcats, 7-0, in its first game of BIG EAST play in 2008. The Scarlet Knights (5-0) were brilliant against their conference rival, snagging their third shutout in five outings this year.
"This is a big win for us," said head coach Ben Bucca. "It gives our girls a great deal of confidence to be able to get such a convincing win over a BIG EAST rival that beat us last season."
The victory was spearheaded by senior No. 1 Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.), who took down Alizee Paradis in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Junior Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defeated Jennifer Keiner in the second spot, 6-1, 6-2, while freshman Amy Zhang (Piano, Texas) improved her season record to 5-0 with an imposing 6-0, 6-2 win over Elizabeth Young at No. 3.
In doubles, Zaretser and Zhang handled Paradis and Keiner, 8-1, while Elder-Bush and sophomore Christine Tran (Centerville, Va.) beat Young and Val Dandik, 8-2. The sophomore team of Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) and Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Ashley Hale and Abigail Mayo.
Rutgers will look to extend its unbeaten streak to six when it takes on BIG EAST opponent Villanova at the Busch Tennis Center on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
