Rutgers Wins Third Straight BIG EAST Match
Apr 14 | Women's Tennis
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's tennis team continued its stellar play by knocking off West Virginia, 6-1, for its third straight BIG EAST win. The Scarlet Knights improve to 13-8 overall and 7-4 in conference play as RU finished the regular season and prepares for the BIG EAST Championships which begin on April 17.
"This was a great team victory in which everyone played some of the best tennis that they've played this year," head coach Ben Bucca said. "The team is peaking in its performance at the right time."
Senior Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) once again paced the Scarlet Knights squad, posting wins at the top two singles spots. Elder-Bush topped Stacey Percival 6-2, 7-5, while Zhang won her 11th straight match by upending Monica Lyskawa 6-4, 6-2.
RU also picked up singles wins from sophomore's Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.), Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.), and Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.). Baker and Tran were both pushed into a third set tiebreaker, with both winning the breaker easily.
In the doubles, Elder-Bush and Arlak won 8-3 over Percival and Natalia Prinz at No. 1, while Baker and Zhang cruised to an 8-2 victory over Monique Burton and Colleen Speaker at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.
The match was the final home match for seniors Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) and Elder-Bush. The two standouts have been major contributors to the RU tennis program for four years.
Rutgers will next head to Tampa, Fla. for the 2008 BIG EAST Championships. They will be held April 17-20 on the Varsity Courts on the campus of South Florida.
