"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Darrin and his family during this difficult time," said Rutgers head baseball coach Fred Hill, who served as Winston's coach from 1985-88. "He was a true joy to be around and one of the most talented pitchers I have had a chance to coach. Above all, his character is what made him very special and we will miss him dearly."

He was a three-time Most Valuable Player for the Scarlet Knights during his career "On the Banks."
