Oct 10 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 10, 2009) - The No. 10/12 Rutgers women's soccer continues its four-game home stand this Sunday, Oct. 11 against the DePaul Blue Demons. Kickoff it set for 1 p.m. The Scarlet Knights (9-2-3, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) look to earn three points against the Blue Demons (8-5-2, 3-3 BIG EAST) to maintain hold on second place in the BIG EAST National Division.
The game will be streamed live through Knightvision Broadband on www.scarletknights.com. Danny Breslauer and Adam Helsgott have the call. Live stats will also be available on www.scarletknights.com.
RU stands at second place in the BIG EAST National Division with 11 points in conference play. UND owns 16 points for first place in the league and Georgetown is right behind the Scarlet Knights with 10 points.
Rutgers boasts a 4-1-2 record on Yurcak Field in 2009, while DePaul sits at 4-5-1 in away games.
On Friday, RU battled for 90 minutes, but fell short, 1-0, against the No. 8/9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Yurcak Field. Senior goalkeeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) made six saves on the night, but it wasn't enough as Notre Dame's Lauren Fowlkes found the net in the 83rd minute of the match.
The Scarlet Knights come into the weekend ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll, climbing three spots from last week, following a 1-0-1 showing in BIG EAST play. The No. 10 NSCAA placement is the highest in program history. In 2006, the squad finished the season at No. 11, but has never cracked the top-10.
Coming into the weekend,Guthrie sits atop the BIG'?EAST in goals against average (.410). The captain also ranks sixth in the NCAA in GAA. Of the five student-athletes in front of her, all have seen less time in goal.
The keeper has allowed just six goals all season, three against ranked opponents. The netminder has seven shutouts on the season, most notably against then ranked-No. 13 Penn State, the first time the Nittany Lions had been left scoreless in 2009, and BIG EAST foe Georgetown.
As a team, the Scarlet Knights have eight shutouts on the season -all but one in Guthrie's name. That statistic placed RU in a tie for 17th in the NCAA coming into the weekend.
