Rutgers Tennis Welcomes Two Standouts

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 17, 2009) - Rutgers tennis welcomes two standouts to the program for the 2010-11 season, head coach Ben Bucca announced Tuesday. Stefania Balasa of East Brunswick, N.J. and Vanessa Petrini of Stamford, Conn. signed NLI's to become Scarlet Knights next season.
"With this year's class, we have the premier players from New Jersey and Connecticut," said Bucca. "Their presence on the team will only enhance our depth and continue the improvement of our program."
Balsa, a four-year letterwinner for East Brunswick High School, was named a four-star recruit by www.tennisrecruiting.net. At No. 1 singles, Balsa was a State Finalist in 2008, as her team won the State Championship. Her team named her MVP in 2007 and 2008. The top-100 recruit is a four-time Middlesex County Tournament winner and played with the Eastern team in the 2009 Junior Fed Cup.
Academically, Balsa maintains a 3.7 GPA in all honors and AP courses. On the honor roll, she is also a member of the French Honor Society.
Petrini, another top-100 recruit according to www.tennisrecruiting.net, is a back-to-back Connecticut State Champion. The two-time Coca-Cola Player of the Year also won the New England Championship. A four-star recruit, the Stamford, Conn. product has been listed at No. 1 in every age group in her section.
The Scarlet Knights begin their 2010 season Sunday, Jan. 21 at Syracuse. The match begins at 10 a.m.
