NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers sophomore Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player at the annual women’s tennis awards banquet held in New Brunswick.
The event was attended by many Rutgers supporters including Athletic Director Tim Pernetti.
“Amy’s award was voted on by the girls on the team and that makes it extra special for her,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “I think she really inspired the girls with her work ethic and intensity to compete. She gets along well with her teammates and is absolutely deserving of this honor.”
Zhang, an All-BIG EAST selection, ended the year with a 16-5 mark at No. 1 singles. She was in integral part of the squads fourth place finish at the 2009 BIG EAST Championships.
Zhang has also been recently selected to attend the NCAA Student Athlete Leadership and Development conference in Orland, Fla. She will attend the conference this summer, representing the Scarlet Knights women’s tennis team.
In addition to Zhang’s award, the Scarlet Knights also honored lone senior Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Zaretser ended her career with a strong senior campaign, finishing the year a perfect 5-0 in singles action and 13-1 in doubles play.
