RU Tennis Announces 2009-10 Schedule

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers women’s tennis team has released its 2009-10 schedule, head coach Benjamin Bucca announced Wednesday. Rutgers will face seven BIG EAST opponents in the spring, including BIG EAST runner-up DePaul.
“We are very energized to continue the great success we had last year,” said Bucca. “Our schedule this season is diverse and demanding, affording us the opportunity to play against some of the best competition in the country. I am confident our very talented student athletes will rise to the occasion."
The Scarlet Knights kick off the fall schedule with a home match on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. against Long Island University. RU then travels to Providence, R.I. for the Brown Invitational Sept. 25-27. Rutgers will participate in the USTA Invitational at the NYC National Tennis Center Oct. 10-12. The Scarlet Knights wrap up the fall schedule at Columbia on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m.
The RU spring season begins in the winter months as the squad travels to Syracuse, a BIG EAST Championship contender, on Jan. 31 for the first BIG EAST contest of the year.
During the first week of February, the Scarlet Knights will host two home matches, against Farleigh Dickinson (Feb. 4 at 2 p.m.) and Georgetown (Feb. 7 at 10 a.m.).
Rutgers will then take a four-match road trip, traveling to Lehigh (Feb. 10), Maryland (Feb. 14) and Cornell (Feb 20-21) to face Binghamton on Saturday and Cornell on Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights come home for two contests against Army on March 7 at 1 p.m. and BIG EAST foe Villanova on March 10 at 2 p.m.
RU plays back-to-back matches on March 14-15, facing Towson State at Villanova on Sunday and Barry University on Monday at 3 p.m. The Scarlet Knights stay on the road to face Nova Southeastern on March 17 and Princeton on March 25.
Rutgers dives into BIG EAST play on March 27 and 31, taking on two BIG EAST Tournament participants to start its conference slate. On Saturday, the Scarlet Knights take on Pittsburgh at home. The squad then travels to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, March 31 to face Connecticut at 2 p.m.
RU matches up against Seton Hall at home on April 6. The Scarlet Knights travel to Milwaukee, Wis. for tough back-to-back matches against BIG EAST foes DePaul and Marquette on April 10-11.
Rutgers closes out the season at home against St. John’s (April 15) and West Virginia (April 17). The BIG EAST Tournament is set for April 22-25.
RU finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championship last season. The Scarlet Knights return All-BIG EAST selection and team MVP Amy Zhang, who ended the year with a 16-5 mark at No. 1 singles. She won nine straight conference matches during the season, and came into the BIG EAST Tournament winning 11 of 12 matches at No. 1 singles.
