
Rutgers Tennis Heads to USTA Invitational

Queens, N.Y. — The Rutgers tennis team heads to Queens, N.Y. this weekend to compete in the three-day USTA Invitational.
Last year in Queens, the squad was led by Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas), who advanced to the finals of the tournament. The Texan won three matches before falling to Emily Ellis of Brown, 6-4, 6-1. Also giving a stellar performance was Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas),who defeated Binghamton’s Lauren Bates in the opening round of the tournament. The All-BIG EAST honoree went on to best Emily Wolf of Penn in the quarterfinals, before falling to Columbia’s Nicole Bartnik. Michelle Green (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament, earning victories against LIU’s Dara Lahens and St. John’s Alyssa Liantonio.
Also at the 2009 Invitational, Zhang joined sophomore Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) in Flight A doubles at the USTA Invitational, defeating UNCG’s Valerie Behr and Lucy Dougherty in the first round, 8-6. The Scarlet Knight duo then defeated Vicky Brook and Stephanie Kent of Yale, 9-8 in the next round before dropping a match to Alex Kelleher and Olga Khymlev of Boston College in the semifinals.
The last time out at the Brown Invitational, RU totaled 14 wins in competition against Auburn, Boston College, Boston University and host Brown. Zhangand Holzbergwon two of their three doubles matches while junior Maryana Milchutsky (Holmdel, N.J.), Green, and freshman Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) all notched two singles victories apiece.
