
Rutgers' Lefeged Earns All-BIG EAST Honors

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (December 8, 2010) – Rutgers senior strong safety Joe Lefeged (Germantown, Md.) was named to the BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team today, the conference office announced in the annual postseason vote of the league’s eight head football coaches. Lefeged finished second on the squad in 2010 with 84 total tackles and led Rutgers with six pass breakups.
One of 10 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive back, Lefeged finished his career with 238 career tackles.
Lefeged was a three-year starting strong safety and a two-year starting kick returner. The senior played the most games of any Scarlet Knight on the roster with 50 appearances, and had the most consecutive appearance of any RU player with 49 straight games.
A special teams standout as well, the senior broke the school record with 948 yards on 38 kickoff returns for a 24.9 yards per return average in 2010. His total kickoff return yardage total of 1,306 ranked fifth-best in school history. The Germantown, Md., native averaged 26.7 yards per kickoff return for his career.
