Rutgers Tennis Sweeps BIG EAST Foe Villanova, 7-0

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 10, 2010) – The Rutgers tennis team toppled Villanova, 7-0, Wednesday at the Busch Tennis Bubble. The Scarlet Knights improve to 6-3 overall, moving to 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
“This was a convincing BIG EAST win,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “We have won three matches in a row at home, and have confidence and momentum as we travel south for our spring break trip in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.”
Rutgers convincingly swept doubles play. Junior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) and sophomore Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) extended their win-streak to six at No. 1 doubles, defeating Carla Erskine and Allison Solberg of Villanova, 8-0. Senior Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) and sophomore Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas) blanked VU’s Courtney Reed and Kristen Gobberg, 8-0.
Zhang also won at No. 1 singles against Reed, 6-1, 6-1. Holzberg defeated Wildcat Carla Erskine (6-1, 6-0) to get two wins in the singles column.
Sophomore Maryana Milchutsky (Holmdel, N.J.) improved to 7-2 on the year at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Villanova’s Allie Harding.
RU heads south to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for three matches against Towson State, Barry and Nova Southeastern on March 14-17.
