Rutgers Tennis Squares Off With Pittsburgh at BIG EAST Championship

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (April 21, 2010) – The No.7 seed Rutgers tennis team (13-7, 7-3) faces No. 10 seed Pittsburgh at the BIG EAST Championship Thursday, April 22 at the Courtney Tennis Center. Action kicks off at 9 a.m.
This will be the third meeting for the Scarlet Knights and Panthers in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. Rutgers has defeated Pittsburgh in all three meetings. RU also defeated Pitt this season on March 27, sweeping the squad 7-0.
Junior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) posted a team-best 16-4 record at No. 1 singles and 15-5 mark at No. 1 singles, pairing mostly with sophomore Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.). The two sit at No. 73 in the ITA rankings as a pair.
Sophomore Maryana Milchutskey (Holmdel, N.J.) dominated at No. 4 singles this season, posting a 13-4 record, including an 8-2 mark in BIG EAST matches.
The Scarlet Knights finished fourth last season at the BIG EAST Championship, losing to Louisville (4-0) on the final day.
Pitt (10-7, 5-5) is led by junior Elizabeth Adams at No. 1 singles. Last season, Adams became Pitt’s first-ever All-BIG EAST selection. The junior defeated Connecticut’s Kelly LoRusso (6-2, 7-5) in her last match out. She pairs with senior Shannon Benic at No. 1 doubles. Benic scored the first point for the Panthers last season at the BIG EAST Championship.
Head coach of Pittsburgh is George Dieffenbach in his 27thseason. The former Pitt standout owns the best women’s tennis record in Panther history, amassing a 278-233 record in his tenure.
The winner of the Rutgers/Pittsburgh match will face No. 2 USF in the second round Friday, April 23 at 9 a.m.
