
Rutgers Tennis Commences 2010 Season Against Long Island

The Rutgers tennis team starts the 2010 fall season Thursday, Sept. 16 against Long Island University at the RU Tennis Complex. Action begins at 1 p.m.
RU is coming off a 14-8 season, falling in the second round of the BIG EAST Championship to No. 24 South Florida. The squad returns six letterwinners from a season ago, including All-BIG EAST honoree Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas).
The Scarlet Knights are led by head coach Ben Bucca in his eighth season with RU. Bucca has led the Scarlet Knights to BIG EAST Tournament berths in six of the last seven seasons, posting an overall record of 89-68 (.567).
Long Island went to the NCAA Tournament last season, falling in the first round to No. 10 Duke. The Blackbirds return four starters from last year’s roster, including Dara Lahens who was named to the All-Northeast Conference First Team at No. 3 doubles last season. The senior went 18-8 in doubles play and recorded a 5-8 mark in singles matches.
The Blackbirds are led by Asi Phillips in his sixth season on the sideline for LIU. Phillips led Long Island to back-to-back NEC titles in 2009 and 2010.
