Piscataway, N.J. - The Rutgers tennis team defeated Long Island University in a scrimmage Thursday at the RU Tennis Complex. Although the squads did not keep team scoring, the Scarlet Knights won eight of the nine matches in an eight game pro set format.
“We demonstrated a very strong performance in our first competition,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “Everyone came out ready to play and played extremely aggressive. It was especially nice to see our two freshmen, Stef Balasa and Vanessa Petrini, playing in their first match for Rutgers and winning every set.”
The two squads competed in 12 total matches. LIU returns four of its six athletes from a 2009 team that appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
Freshmen Stef Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) each won all three rounds of competition on the day.
