The Rutgers tennis team travels to Providence, R.I. this weekend to compete in the Brown Invitational, a three-day tournament against Auburn, Brown, Boston College, and Boston University.
Last year at the five-team tournament, RU faced three ranked opponents in the Tigers, Terriers and Bears. Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) each had three wins and one loss. As a doubles team, the pair went 2-1 in the tournament.
Rutgers defeated Long Island University in their season opener at the RU Tennis Complex. Although the squads did not keep team scoring, the Scarlet Knights won eight of the nine matches in an eight game pro set format.
All-BIG EAST honoree Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) leads the Scarlet Knights at No. 1 singles. Also showing great promise during their young college careers are freshmen Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.),whoeach won all three rounds of competition against LIU.
Brown will begin its season this weekend as the host of the tournament. They return Bianca Aboubakare and Cassandra Herzberg who earned All-Ivy honors last season.
Auburn competed in the SEC Fall Classic last weekend and finished with eleven wins in single and double matches on the weekend.
Boston College also opens their season at the Brown Invitational. Last season, the Eagles fell to Virginia in the first round of the ACC tournament.
Boston University enters the season looking to capture its 18th-straight America East title. The Terriers return five of the six singles players that helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament for the 12th-consecutive season last May.
