Rutgers Softball Downs UMES 13-3 in Five Innings

Hampton, Va. (March 6, 2011) – Led by four RBI from junior Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.), Rutgers softball (7-7) easily handled University of Maryland Eastern Shore (1-11) by a 13-3 score Sunday at the Lady Pirates Classic.
The .500 record through 14 games marks the best start for the Scarlet Knights since 2003, when RU began the season 7-6-1.
Freshman Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) earned the win for the Scarlet Knights, allowing three runs on four hits while fanning five.
RU used small ball to put runners on second and third in the first inning and Messina brought them home with a blast over the center field wall. The homer, her team-leading fifth of the season, gave the Scarlet Knights a early 3-0 lead.
Rutgers added two runs in the second as sophomore Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) doubled to left field and Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) moved her over with a single to the shortstop. Danielle Procopio (Vineland, N.J.) was hit by a pitch to lead the bases and Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) was hit by another to score the fourth run of the game. Messina was hit by another pitch to give RU a 5-0 lead going into the third.
The Scarlet Knights used three hits, including a RBI single up the middle by Meinheit, to score another run in the third. RU used five hits and a UMES error in the fourth to score five more runs. Four straight singles by Lindley, Craig, Messina and Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) loaded the bases for Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash,) who blasted a double to left center for three RBI.
Rutgers will spend its spring break in Florida, as the Scarlet Knights head to Boca Raton next weekend to face Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee State, Hofstra and Michigan State.
