
Rutgers Tennis Earns No. 6 Seed at BIG EAST Championship

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 27, 2010) - Rutgers tennis, claiming the No. 6 seed at the BIG EAST tournament, takes on the No. 11 seed West Virginia Thursday, April 28, at the Eck Tennis Pavilion on the campus of Notre Dame. The match begins at 11 a.m.
The Scarlet Knights have won 10 of their last 11 matches this season. Rutgers finished the regular season with a 15-5 record and a 7-3 record in conference play. In the last showing between the two squads, RU defeated WVU by a 6-1 margin.
The Knights have been led this season by senior Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) who posted a 15-5 record and a 7-3 mark in league play. The senior has held the No. 1 singles position all season. In the West Virginia match earlier this month, Zhang defeated Melis Tanik 7-6, 6-2.
Rutgers freshman Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) capped a stellar rookie season with a win against Connecticut, ending her year at 19-1. Petrini defeated West Virginia's Liv Pettersson by a 6-1, 6-1 score this season.
West Virginia finished the season with a record of 8-12, including a 4-5 mark in league action. In the Mountaineers' last outing, the squad downed UConn, 5-2. WVU's young team is led by the freshmen Melis Tanik, who holds the No. 1 spot in singles.
The winner of the Rutgers/West Virginia match will face third seeded DePaul Friday, April 29, at noon.
