PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 23, 2011) – Rutgers sophomore closer Jerry Elsing (Montville, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor Roll, the league announced on Monday.
Elsing picked up a pair of saves for the Scarlet Knights in victories over West Virginia this past weekend. The closer worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with a strikeout and one hit allowed in his two outings against the Mountaineers. With Rutgers holding 6-4 lead in Thursday’s series opener vs. WVU, Elsing entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He struck out WVU cleanup hitter Grant Buckner to end the game and post his first save. Elsing also worked an inning of scoreless relief in Friday’s contest to earn his second save in as many days as RU defeated WVU, 7-5.
It is the second time in his career Elsing was recognized by the league. He earned a spot on the conference’s weekly honor roll as a freshman last season.
Rutgers completed the 2011 season 20-30 overall with an 11-16 record in BIG EAST play.
