Oct 26 | Women's Tennis
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 26, 2012) - The Rutgers tennis program released its spring 2013 schedule, 10th-year head coach Ben Bucca announced Friday. The slate is highlighted by nine BIG EAST matches and three matches against squads that made the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships.
The schedule includes 20 regular season matches with six at home, 13 on the road and one at a neutral court. The team hosts four conference matches and has five away league contests. The season will culminate with the BIG EAST Championships, hosted by USF in Tampa, Fla., from April 18-21.
Rutgers totaled 13 wins last season and earned a spot in the BIG EAST Championships. The team does not have any seniors, and is led by juniors Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.). Sophomores Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.), Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) and Satreethai Sasinin (New Brunswick, N.J.) are also key returnees. The newcomers include Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.), Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas).
Balasa compiled a 13-9 record last season, including 8-2 in the BIG EAST. Petrini matched Balasa's win total, going 13-8 with a 6-4 record in the conference, while also being named to the All-BIG EAST Women's Tennis Team.
The season commences with a home match against Delaware (Feb. 3) at the RU Tennis Complex. The squad will then hit the road for contests with Lehigh (Feb. 7) and Penn (Feb. 9). Rutgers then hosts Farleigh Dickinson (Feb. 13), who participated in the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships last season, before traveling to take on local rival Princeton (Feb. 16).
Conference play will then open with the Scarlet Knights welcoming Cincinnati (Feb. 17) to the RU Tennis Complex. The team will conclude February against Army (Feb. 23), which is another team that made the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships.
Rutgers opens March with its only home match of the month, bringing conference-foe Marquette to Piscataway, N.J., on March 1. The Scarlet Knights then go on a nine-match road trip, starting with a conference contest at Connecticut (March 5). The team then heads to West Virginia (March 9) followed by a BIG EAST match with Pitt (March 10).
The squad takes on three non-conference opponents on the road, starting with California (Pa.) in a neutral site contest on March 17, Barry in Miami Shores, Fla. (March 18) and Nova Southeastern (March 20) in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Rutgers closes out March with league opponent Villanova (March 27) and 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships participant Yale (March 30).
The April schedule, all BIG EAST matches, starts at St. John's (April 4), before hosting Syracuse (April 7) and Seton Hall (April 10). The Scarlet Knights conclude the regular season at Georgetown (April 13). The BIG EAST Championships will begin in Tampa, Fla., a week later (April 18-21).
