PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 20, 2013) - In the final match of its spring break trip, the Rutgers women's tennis team swept California University of Pennsylvania, 7-0, in Miami Shores, Fla., Wednesday.
The format of the match was five singles contests, each worth one point, followed by one doubles competition worth two points.
"Our ladies had a terrific week," said assistant coach Hilary Ritchie. "It's always very demanding to come down and play in a lot of heat and sun, which we transitioned to very well. We were pushed physically and mentally and the girls played some absolutely terrific tennis. Congratulations to all of the ladies on a wonderful spring break. We're looking forward to the rest of the season."
Led by 10th-year head coach Benjamin Bucca, RU improved to 9-5 in 2013 and went 2-1 on its Florida trip. The Vulcans fell to 6-7.
Freshmen Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) earned the two doubles points as the tandem downed Lucie Spikova and Lucie Ray of Cal U, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
The Scarlet Knights continued their dominance in singles play. Junior Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) started it off in No. 1 singles, going to a third-set tiebreaker with Ramona Czakon of the Vulcans. She won (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) to earn her ninth win of the campaign. Sophomore Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) also won a hard-fought contest by scores of 6-7 (8-6), 6-1 and 10-8.
Freshman Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) defeated Cal U's Alexandra Borgenhoff (6-3, 6-4) to record her team-high 11th win of the season. Junior Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and sophomore Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) also picked up singles victories.
Rutgers next continues BIG EAST play on the road, taking on Villanova in Villanova, Pa., at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27.
