Smorol Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 13, 2013) - Senior left-hander Rob Smorol (Clark, N.J.) of the Rutgers baseball team earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. He tossed seven shutout innings to defeat Georgetown in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader.
With the victory over the Hoyas, Smorol has now defeated every current team in the BIG EAST (plus West Virginia) over his career. He owns an overall record of 16-10 against BIG EAST opponents in 43 appearances (26 starts). Additionally, the 43 league appearances tie for the most in BIG EAST history, while his 201.1 conference innings are second in the books.
Against Georgetown, Smorol allowed only two hits - the least amount surrendered in 42 collegiate starts. The left-hander walked three and totaled four strikeouts, running a streak to 14.2 innings pitched without permitting an earned run. His ERA sits at 2.70 for the season.
Smorol is second in school history with 307.0 innings and needs 10 more frames to tie Casey Gaynor for the most. He is also second in the RU record books with 42 starts, tied for third with 22 wins, third with 199 strikeouts and tied for eighth with 69 appearances.
It is the second conference recognition for Smorol this year, as he was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week back on Feb. 25.
Having already clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Championships, the Scarlet Knights will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at USF starting Thursday. RU has won its last five league games and is in fifth place in the standings.
