PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 16, 2014) - Following a strong outing at the Bulldog Invitational, the Rutgers women's tennis team wraps up fall competition at the ITA Regional Championship hosted by Yale University. The tournament is set for Friday through Tuesday.
"The girls played some of the best tennis they have ever played since arriving at Rutgers," head coach Ben Bucca said of the team's performance at last weekend's invitational. "We had some strong wins and faced some tough losses, but overall we are proud of our performances. We are well prepared for Regionals this weekend."
A total of 41 schools will be represented at ITA Regionals, consisting of 120 singles participants and 60 doubles pairs. Five Scarlet Knights have qualified to compete in the tournament, including five players in singles play and two duos in doubles.
In singles play, juniors Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.), along with freshman Chloe Lee (Alburquerque, N.M.) have each earned a spot in the main draw of the event. Senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and junior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) will first compete in a qualifying round of 32 participants vying for eight remaining spots in the main draw.
The duos of Zein and Li plus Balsamo and Lee have notched the opportunity to contend in doubles action for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers returns to competition in the spring, kicking off its inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.
