PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 15, 2014) - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has named Rutgers women's tennis to the 2014 ITA All-Academic Team. Senior Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.), junior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.), sophomore Lindsey Kayati (Monroeville, N.J.) and freshman Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) each earned individual honors.
"The team had an outstanding season. We excelled competitively ending the season with a record of 16-5 and with this award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association it demonstrates the team's excellence in the classroom," said head coach Ben Bucca, Jr.
The ITA All-Academic Team requires at least a 3.2 team grade point average. It is the sixth time in the last seven years that the Scarlet Knights have been awarded for their success in academics.
The ITA Scholar-Athlete award calls for an individual GPA of 3.5 in order to earn recognition. Balasa, Balsamo, Kayati and Cunningham are four of the 708 scholar-athletes awarded, showing the strength of Division I student-athletes in the classroom.
Balasa adds yet another honor to the list. In May, the senior was awarded the ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award for the Northeast region.
Balsamo earned recognition as the team's overall scholar-athlete for the 2013-14 season, having achieved the highest GPA on the squad.
"We are all very proud of the accomplishments of the team," said Bucca. "With a new season right around the corner, we look forward to continuing our tradition at Rutgers Tennis of excellence on the court and in the classroom."
