PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's tennis team opens its fall season on the road at the Brown Invitational from Friday, Sept. 19 to Sunday, Sept. 21. The tournament features host Brown, Boston College, Boston University, University of Massachusetts and Providence.
"We are really looking forward to competing at the Brown Invitational," said head coach Ben Bucca. "It is a well-run tournament, which features some of the best teams in the region. We are preparing for the competition and we are optimistic that we will play well against the top opponents."
Boston College, Brown and Boston University finished the 2013-14 season as three of the top teams in the region. BC concluded the season ranked third in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Northeast Region Ranking, followed by Brown at eighth and BU at ninth. Rutgers finished 10th in the rankings.
RU's trip to Providence, R.I. this weekend marks the second-consecutive year the Scarlet Knights participated in the Brown Invitational.
Last season, Senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and sophomore Farris Cunningham (Houston, Texas) advanced to the finals in singles play, while the duo of Balsamo and Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas) reached the finals of doubles action.
Zein captured a third place finish in the Green Singles Flight.
"The team has worked extremely hard preparing for the fall season," said Bucca. "They are highly motivated, which is right where we want them to be."
Following the weekend on the road, RU returns home for a match against ASA College on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
