HANOVER, N.H. (Oct. 26, 2015) - The Rutgers tennis team finished up competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships in Hanover, N.H.
Senior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) advanced to the round of 16 in her singles draw, while the duos of Li and senior Mariam Zein (Sugarland, Texas), and sophomore Chloe Lee (Albuquerque, N.M.) and junior Ksenija Tihomirova (Riga, Latvia) both appeared in the round of 16.
"We had a great regional championship, especially demonstrating strong doubles play," said head coach Ben Bucca. "With 40 teams competing, we were one of only two teams to have four players still competing in the round of 16. We played well and demonstrated strong Big Ten Conference tennis to the rest of the teams in the region. Congratulations to all four athletes on playing an outstanding tournament"
After a first-round bye, Li downed Boston University's Iryna Kostirko, 6-3, 6-3 to move on to the round of 32. Li then delivered a 6-4, 6-4, victory against Shreya Pasricha of Fairleigh Dickinson to advance to the round of 16, where she eventually fell to highly-seeded Dayna Lord of Brown, 6-4, 6-1.
Lee, Tihomirova and Zein all competed in the respective qualifier tournament, as Zein captured a victory in the first round of the event against Syracuse's Ester-Liba Mesh, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles play, Lee and Tihomirova secured a win over UConn's Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph and Srna Stosljevic, 8-6. The duo was also victorious in the round of 32 with a victory against Penn's Lina Qodtal and Ojasvinee Singh, 8-7 (5). The pair eventually lost to Yale's Tina Jiang and Valerie Shklover, 8-3.
Li and Zein also produced two wins at the tournament, starting with a 8-5 win over Army West Point's Kirby Elnck and Nan Porter. Li and Zein also defeated Syracuse's Gabriela Knutson and Maria Tritou, 8-3, before falling to Brown's Alyza Benotto and Lord, 8-6.
