COLLEGE PARK, MD. (Feb. 28, 2015) - In its first ever Big Ten matchup, the Rutgers women's tennis team was topped by No. 54 Maryland, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for RU.

Rutgers moves to an overall record of 4-3 on the season, while Maryland improves to 5-4.

Maryland opened the match with consecutive victories in doubles play to claim the team doubles point. Senior Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and junior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) put up a strong fight against Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova, however, the Scarlet Knight duo fell by the score of 8-5 to end doubles action.

In singles play, Li and Balsamo pushed their matches to tie breakers to give RU a chance to catch up in the match. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Li battled back to claim a 6-2 victory of her own. In the extra round, Li was topped by the close score of 7-5.

At the No. 4 singles spot, Balsamo won the first set, 6-4, however, she dropped the next 6-1. In the tie breaker, Balsamo was edged 7-3.

Up next, Rutgers remains on the road for a matchup at Navy on Saturday, Mar. 1. Doubles action is set to start at 10 a.m.
