Tennis Welcomes Minnesota, Wisconsin

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 26, 2014) - Continuing a four-match homestand, the Rutgers women's tennis team welcomes No. 69 Minnesota and Wisconsin to the Rutgers Tennis Complex. The Scarlet Knights host the Gophers on Friday, March 27 and the Badgers on Sunday, March 29. Both contests are set to begin at noon.
Sunday's match marks Senior Day for Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.). The Scarlet Knight will play her final home game "On the Banks."
RU'S LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, RU suffered losses to then-No. 22 Ohio State, 7-0, and Penn State, 6-1.
The Scarlet Knights entered singles play at a disadvantage against the Buckeyes after dropping the team doubles point. However, junior Gina Li (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Balsamo kept their singles matches close in attempt to get RU rolling. Ulimately, Li fell by the small margin of 6-3, 6-4 and Balsamo was topped by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
In the match against PSU, Li withstood a challenging match at the No. 1 singles spot. In the tie breaking round, Li dominated Katia Balik with a 10-4 win to claim the lone victory of the match for RU.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA
No. 69 Minnesota (11-6, 1-2 Big Ten) had won six straight matches before then-No. 13 Michigan snapped the streak with a 7-0 win over the Gophers. Minnesota dropped its next contest at then-No. 44 Michigan State by a score of 4-3, generating a two-match skid.
In the match against MSU, the Gophers swept the doubles portion of the match, however, the Spartans grabbed four singles matchups to take the win. Aria Lambert and Julia Courter recorded the two victories in singles play for Minnesota.
Head coach Chuck Merzbacher is in his third season with the Gophers.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN
Wisconsin (6-7, 0-3 Big Ten) enters the weekend on a four-match losing streak, three of which were conference matchups.
Lauren Chypyha leads the team with an overall record of 19-5 in singles action. Lauren Burich follows with a 17-9 mark. In doubles play, the duo of Kelsey Grambeau and Burich pace the squad with a record of 18-9.
The Badgers are led by second-year head coach Tina Samara.
Wisconsin will first visit No. 53 Maryland on Saturday, March 28 before its match at Rutgers.
